News and EventsCASARA Ottawa TaskingEmail of appreciation from JRCC Trenton thanking the CASARA Ottawa Zone for their efforts during back to back SAR incidents.Sent: Tuesday, July 28, 2009 11:19 AM Subject: CASARA Ottawa support Anne, I would like to pass on my sincere appreciation for the support that I got from Ottawa recently (like today). I had multiple cases on the go (and the Herc was unserviceable) when I started getting ELT reports west of Montreal. I tasked Ottawa at approx 6pm (as well as Gatineau because it was in their turf). Ottawa responded quickly and got on scene and located the ELT in a timely manner. As the crew determined, the ELT was at Hawksbury East. Your guys scrambled a ground crew to proceed to that location, but luckily I was able to contact someone (at home) associated with the airport. The offending ELT was a C150 in for its’ annual inspection. The ELT was in the ON position. The crew got back about 10:20 pm and was doing the debrief and paperwork. We received a call about a possible crash in the Ottawa River and the police wanted to know about someone who might be able to listen out on 121.5 if there was an ELT. Mike Casey and others responded. The Griffon was tasked and flew the night mission. Mike maintained the link between the air and ground assets. Mike was released about 4 am (having already flown on the Hawksbury tasking). This has always been a huge problem with inter-agency operations (air to ground comms). All concerned commented on how valuable this need was and how Mike was a tremendous asset in the police CP, not only for comms, but for his sar experience on what the Griffon was doing. I relied on Mike to pass critical information and get a technically correct sar response. Mike volunteered to return at 6 am to continue his duties. As I left my shift (at 9am – usually 7:30) I understand he would be relieved mid-morning. Mike’s commitment was duly noted. He played a key part in coordinating the air-ground assets He certainly went above and beyond what one might expect of a volunteer. Please pass on my thanks to all those involved, especially Mike, who were involved in the airborne ELT homing, the ground team response and the “possible crash” in the Ottawa River.
